About the campaign

Engineering a Better Future is a campaign started by the Association of Professional Engineers Australia, but its ideas were generated by you and many other like-minded engineers want to see change.

Engineers are key drivers of our future, building our cities and driving our economy. A large share of our national wealth hinges on the contribution of our engineers, and their ability to derive new ideas, products and solutions to our challenges as a nation.

In Australia, the engineering profession is little understood and undervalued. Too many non-engineers are working in jobs that should be performed by professional engineers.

This causes many problems and not enough effort is directed at solving them.

The over-reliance on non-engineers in project management and decision-making leads to poor project scope, design and delivery, which is devaluing the profession.

It also costs Government and business money, because when projects are not scoped, designed and delivered under the watchful eye of an engineer, they get delivered less efficiently.

With a huge amount of engineering work required and Australia’s growing infrastructure needs, we are not innovating fast enough or investing in our men and women through proper engineering workforce planning, and high-quality graduate programs and training.

The gender pay gap has been raised with us countless times by female engineers who only want a fair go and recognition for their work on its merit.

We’ve consulted with engineers across Australia and identified the priorities for change.

To make these changes a reality, engineers need to have a stronger voice. With strength in numbers, we can create positive change in our industry and get the respect, recognition and reward we deserve.

Together, we must lift the standing of the profession and make engineers far more central to the decisions of Government and business.
